Sites We Believe Are Reliable Sources of Health, Weight Loss and Exercise Information
(These sites were selected by Wayne Baker based on his knowledge and beliefs about health. They tend to be selected based on current science, and away from unproven alternative medicine. Please note that alternative medicine is NOT inherently bad, simply not well-tested and proven by the scientific community [often because there isn’t money in it!], but they must be approached with caution, as things like herbal medicines are not well regulated or controlled, and actually may be dangerous [as evidenced by ephedra recently]. These sites are not under the control of Mark of Fitness, Inc., and we are not responsible for their content.)

www.drmirkin.com – an excellent website with lots of good resources compiled by Dr. Gabe Mirkin and his wife, Diana, a nutritionist. It has about 200 hours of Dr. Mirkin’s radio show in mp3 format (actually about 35 minutes each because the commercials have been removed), which you can download and listen to at your leisure (or in your car by cutting a CD). It also has lots of information on specific conditions. Mirkin is a former high-level runner and today a hard-core cyclist.
www.cooperaerobics.com – This is Dr. Kenneth Cooper’s website. Cooper is a big proponent of preventive medicine who is credited with coining the term “aerobics.” The Cooper Clinic is noted for their work in sports and exercise and their relationship to health. You can also download mp3’s of the last several weeks of his radio show.
www.nih.gov – is the home page of the National Institutes of Health. It has lots of resources and is one of the best places to go when you are looking for information about a disease or condition. It has links to the individual institutes, including:
National Cancer Institute – www.nci.nih.gov
National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute - www.nhlbi.nih.gov (The name sounds boring, but this is where you go for heart disease and hypertension information.) They have a good body Mass index calculator at www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/bmicalc.htm
National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases - www.niddk.nih.gov – (This site also has a lot of information relating to blood pressure, diabetes, and their links to overweight.) Their diabetes education site isn’t as easy-to-find as it should be, it’s at: www.ndep.nih.gov
www.prevention.com - Prevention Magazine’s excellent website about general health and wellness.
www.smallstep.gov – this website from the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services is a great source of information on how to lose weight successfully.

Running
www.runnersworld.com – the leading running magazine in the U.S.A. It is a very inclusive site and magazine, attempting to cater to all levels of running, from the beginner to the seasoned runner. One of their best pages is their running store list, it’ll help you find a nearby store, you can find it at: www.xyz.com
www.runningtimes.com
– the racing and performance oriented national running magazine.
www.letsrun.com – a site mostly for serious runners and racers. They have an excellent news front page and excellent message boards, but if you go there and ask a beginner’s question on the message boards, they’ll rip your head off.
www.rrca.com – the site of Road Runners Club of America, use it to locate nearby clubs and to find out more about running.
www.usatf.org – the website of U.S.A. Track and Field, the governing body of track and field in the U.S.A.

Bicycling
www.bicycling.com -
